RATIONALE:

This course teaches students how to evaluatewhat others have published on their researchtopic of interest. Students will developscholarly and practitioner research questions.Students will select the most appropriateresearch design and be taught to collect andanalyze data (nominal, ordinal, interval andratio). The skills learned in this course preparestudents to write scholarly articles, grantproposals for funding, and how to evaluateexisting government and nonprofit socialservice programs.

This course is intended for students pursuingtheir graduate degree in Public Administration,Political and Justice Studies, Criminal Justice,or a graduate degree in the social sciences.This course is also open to public sectorpractitioners who want to develop theirresearch and writing skills.

ACTIVITIES/ASSIGNMENTS/REQUIREMENTS:
Class Assignments: All written assignments must follow 6th Edition APA format. TheAPA Manual can be found in the reference section at most libraries. Basic APA formatis available on the GSU website. Five points will be deducted from assignments that donot follow the APA format.

1. Cover page prepared in APA format.
2. An abstract prepared in APA format.
3. Reference page prepared in APA format.
4. The sources cited in the body of the text must be presented in APAFormat.
5. All assignments must be double-spaced – 12-point font.

At Governors State University all projects involving human subjects must be reviewed andapproved by the Institutional Review Board.

The purpose of the IRB is to ensure the protection of human research subjects. Code of FederalRegulation Title 45, Part 46 requires that all institutions receiving federal funds and conductingresearch using living humans establish and operate an IRB.

IRB Training: Certificates illustrating IRB Training Completion must be submitted Thursday,February 22, 2018. Certificates completed after the deadline date will not be awarded 20 points.You cannot conduct your study without IRB certification.
