1. What behaviors tell you the child is developing an understanding of something? Find and observe any of the behaviors listed on pages 166-169 in our text.

For example; conservation, developing number sense,counting, patterns, symbolic function, classification, causality, pretend play, one to one correspondence, larger or smaller, theory of mind, or the ability to distinguish between fantasy and reality.

2. Watch the child encounter and solve problems. What do you notice?

3. Reflect on an early play experience in which you were challenged. Did you gain some benefits from that experience?

Please answer these questions in your paper if you are observing your own child, a friend’s child, or a relative.

1. How high can the child you are observing count?

2. Start with 2 equal sized short wide clear cups; fill each with the same amount of water. Ask the child if they look the same. Once the child agrees pour one of the cups of water into a tall, thin, third clear cup. Ask the child, “Do both cups contain the same amount of water? Or does one contain more? Why?” What was their answer? Why do you think they answered that way? See pg. 168 for more information
