According to Naranjo et al., (1981), a drug is a natural substance which when taken by a person it changes the normal function of the body or structure and sometimes used for diagnosis, mitigation and treatment of diseases. However, such drugs can be addictive or harmful once they are misused. However, regarding the duration of psychoactive drugs is that personal accounts and anthropological proofs shows that human beings have been using the substance of psychoactive for the last many millennia ( Naranjo et al., 1981) . These are some of the examples of the ancient users of the psychoactive substances. These are;

There was chewing of betel nut in Timor, in 13000 years, also, the same betel nut was chewed in Thailand in the year 17000. Additionally, Pituri and Nicotiana, which are narcotic in nature, were used by Aborigines before the contact of European ( Hall, 2004) . Similarly, Tobacco and Khat were used by Native Americans and Ethiopians respectfully, before the contact of European. The nature of the extensive use of psychoactive substance by different is very interesting having considered the harmful nature of the same substance nowadays. However, the use of the substances some long time ago is different from the type of substances that are used today. For instance, some cultures where such substances mentioned above are used is no longer perceived as drugs, instead, they are perceived as food ( Hall, 2004) .

Nicotine is one of the substance that I have selected. Its effect on the brain are such as activating the circuitry that used to control someone’s pleasure ( Hall, 2004) . However, recent studies have shown that nicotine increases dopamine level, which is the main chemical of the brain that is used in facilitating the craving to use more drugs, which acts as the brain’s reward circuit.

Health wise, nicotine suppresses the output of insulin from the pancreases making smokers to be slightly hypoglycemic. Also, the rush of adrenaline makes the body to be stimulated leading to sudden glucose release and increase in the blood pressure high rate of heartbeats and high respiration. Similarly, nicotine leads to lung diseases like chronic bronchitis and exacerbation symptoms of asthma ( Hall, 2004) . Lastly, females who smoke are likely to have early menopause. On behavior wise, nicotine leads to addiction where the users cannot do any activity without using it ( Hall, 2004) . Therefore, it changes the behavior of an individual by making him to be addicted to it.

However, the circumstance under which drug should be banned is where they cause the users to be addictive. In this case, they are spending a lot of money to attain their satisfaction due to addiction. Also, if the drugs harms people’s health, then such drugs should be banned. For this reason, it will be good for alcohol to be banned in the United States due to the extreme side effects to the users.
