Question Description

After reading the one-act play "Trifles", I feel like the play is a lot different than what is it in the journal that was originally written about the true story of the murder. The play actually takes place at the crime scene and the article would have just went over the main events that took place instead of piece by piece or word for word like the play. The article would have had information about the murder from beginning to the end of the investigation instead of stopping half way through it like the play does. I am sure that the article would have had information in it about if the wife was found guilty of the murder and would not have left us wondering like the play did. The title of the play "Trifles", means that the women wasn't treated with respect. The men did not value the thoughts or opinions of the women (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012). I think that the bird was used to symbolize the life of Mrs. Wright. She was described as to be a bird herself. Minnie Wright's character came off to be a lady who had been wonderful to her husband and was still being abused and after many years of tolerating it, she finally had enough of it and ended up killing him (Glaspell, n.d.).

Presenting the story through drama offers a totally different feel for the play as a whole. It adds a hidden suspicion within the story line. Just the fact that it is labeled a drama the mind immediately runs into thinking mode. Like all the arts, Drama allows students to communicate with and understand others in new ways. Drama is an important tool for preparing students to live and work in a world that is increasingly team oriented rather than hierarchical. Drama also helps students develop tolerance and empathy (www.study.com).
The title of the play carries a heavy significance to the character Mrs. Wright. There are so many things that are happening to her life within the play but her main concern is her trifles. This lets the reader know that she is not bothered with the death of her husband but the things that make her happy. The symbols that are recognizable in the play are things like the fact that Mrs. Wright was unbothered with the fact that her husband was dead and she was unbothered by the fact that she might go to jail. Her only worry was her household and the small things that she personally owned. Another thing that was alarming was the fact that she had a dirty house. The play describes her as a homemaker however it seems that she only was interested in her own personal task like sewing and making trifles.
The characters in the play seem to be divided between the men and the women. The men are only interested in the obvious. They never seek to look further into the death of Mr. Wright. On the other hand, the women take a deeper look into Mrs. Wright as a person and not as a murderer. Personally it seems that Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale start to empathize with the thoughts of Mrs. Wright. That mood is the most absorbing aspect of this hour long “Trifles.” In reimagining Glaspell’s play, the ensemble gambles that a host of nontraditional methods will help heighten the tension and foster compassion. Some of those chances pay off. A few don’t. And others just need to sink in (www.nytimes.com). I can agree with this fully. It did take nontraditional thinking to solve what could have been a simple case.
