Compatibilism is the claim that free will and determinism are not mutually exclusive. The theory argues that free will is the ability to act in accordance with one's motivations, but not to actually choose those underlying motivations. I remember running across this idea back when I was a Christian trying to understand why God would condemn someone to eternal damnation for decisions they would inevitably make. As soon as I ran across the idea, I came to the conclusion that this was just semantics because it just relies solely on defining free will in a certain way. A philosophical argument that comes down to semantics is only useful for the sake of figuring out what words to use to describe ideas and is otherwise meaningless. Compatibilism is by definition correct because it states that two logically consistent ideas are logically consistent, without necessarily claiming those ideas themselves are true. Determinism and free will as defined by compatibilism are not mutually exclusive. As far as I see it, compatibilism in a Christian context is nothing but a semantic justification to claim it is by sinners' free will that they will go to hell.

In summary, compatibilism only serves as a semantic excuse to claim that there is free will while still believing in determinism.
