The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast two articles on the topic of Islam and democracy. Students must readthese two paperstogether ina waythat highlights the differentconclusionsthatthereadermightdraw.Studentsarerequiredto readthetwoarticles carefullyandformulateacriticalpositionontheissue.

The relationship between Islam and democracy in the contemporary world is complex. While Bernard Lewis sees the lack of freedom in Islam as the major obstacle to democratization, Esposito and Voll argue that Islamic tradition contains a number of key concepts that support democracy. Compare and contrast the arguments of these thinkers and critically analyze the most essential features of their debate.

Formatting Requirements:
