There are many different ways in which teachers can build positive relationships with parents and students. I think one of the most important ways in which to connect with parents and students is to show care and concern for them. As a parent, you want to know that your child is not only learning and growing academically, but also cared for by those who impact their lives. Students also want to know that they are cared for and are more than just some kid in your class. Getting to know students and their interests help build a sense of community.
In addition to the sense of care, I think parents want to be able to communicate with the teacher easily. If the only interaction a teacher has with parents about the student is negative, then that can form a negative outlook of the teacher. My previous administrator used to say “Kiss, Kiss, Smack, Kiss”. Basically, if you have something negative to tell a parent, don’t just blurt out the negative. Tell the parents some good things going on, put the negative issue in the middle, and end with something positive/solution.
Finally, I think it is important to not only listen to parents, but also students. So many times teachers can be busy trying to finish the “to-do list” that they forget to truly listen to what parents and students are saying. Communication is not just speaking; it is also really hearing what is being said (or not being said). As a teacher, I want to be personable and approachable. I want my students and their parents to know they are cared for and that I want them to succeed in the classroom. I can apply this in the classroom by setting up various ways to communicate with families, and actively listen to students and their interests.
