Study: You collect data for a study that looks at helpingbehavior among a group of participants similar to a study by Latane and Darley,who looked at the bystander effect. After completing their informed consentforms, participants are placed in rooms by themselves and given a headset thatthey can use to both hear and speak to other participants. Unknown to the realparticipant, all other participants are confederates, or researchers pretendingto be participants. The researcher instructs the real participant that they aregoing to have a conversation about making friends with the other “participants”,and that they should determine through their conversation what the best stepsare in making friends. Some of the real participants think that they are onlytalking to one other participant (Alone condition). Some real participantsthink they are talking to two other participants (+2 condition). A final set ofreal participants think they are talking to three other participants (+3condition). In all conditions, one of the confederate goes into what soundslike a seizure. The researcher then measures two things. First, does the realparticipant try to help the seizing confederate? Second, after explaining thatthe seizing participant was actually not in any danger, the researchers askedthe participant how much responsibility they felt to help the seizing person (0= no responsibility to 10 = full responsibility). Like the original studyauthors, you think that real participants will be more likely to help and thinkthey are more responsible for providing help when they think they are alone inthe conversation.
