The Legal and Regulatory Environment of Business

Fall 2018 (Online)

Final Paper

Select one of the cases below. Each is a precedent-setting U.S. Supreme Court case. Each also presents

an opportunity to really dive into a specific BUS law issue. After reviewing the case opinion and any

outside research you’d like to cultivate, complete a paper in which you discuss the case and argue

whether the Court ‘got it wrong’ or ‘got it right’. Additionally, offer a discussion of the resulting impact

of the case, if any. I’ve offered a sample structure below. You are not required to follow this structure.

Sample Paper Outline

I. Introduction and roadmap for the essay (1 paragraph)

II. Facts in the case (likely 2 paragraphs)

III. Legal Procedure – how the case got all the way up to the Supreme Court (1 paragraph)

IV. The Court’s decision and reasoning – what they decided and why (likely 2-3 paragraphs)

VI. Argument in support of or in opposition to the Court’s decision (likely 1-2 paragraphs)

VII. How the case impacted business – this may be actual or hypothetical (likely 2 or more

paragraphs)

VIII. Conclusion (1 paragraph)
