The Christian concept of the imago dei is Latin for “The imageof God”. It refers to the unique imprint God placed on humanity; it identifiespeople as a special creation. The concept implies that God created man in hisown image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them(ReligionFacts, (n.d.). The World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948 definedhealth as “the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being andnot merely the absence of disease and infirmity” (World Health Organization,2018). Unofficially added the term “spiritual” to the definition- the state ofcomplete physical mental, social and spiritual well-being.
When it comes to nursing, care is directed to the whole person,not just the physical need; but also to the social, psychological, andspiritual needs that are presented to us. Many physical needs have their rootsin the other dimensions. Some of the relapsing health problems that we see maybe related to our not caring for the whole person. Sometimes we are treatingthe symptom, a physical manifestation of illness, instead of the root cause ofthe problem, a spiritual need.
Many people go on Missions around the world claiming to be helping the ill inthe name of God. This gives hope to the people in need and while doing so, theyare able to teach the people about the words of God and how he can help answertheir prayers. It gives them someone or something to look up to for hope tochange their situation. Likewise, in the healthcare workplace, we ask ourpatients of they would like to have a chaplin, rabbi or other religious leadersto join them in their time of need when receiving bad news, about to go to theoperating room or news about facing death due to a prognosis they just received.I think that if it helps people get through a tough time, and the patientwelcomes it, then spirituality is absolutely appropriate to add into thehealthcare workplace.
