These videos are point blank about racism and discrimination in a consumeristic setting. Because of In the Shopping while Black experiment video, the worker singles out a black woman for doing nothing other than being black. Regardless of her clothing, she was racially profiled under the excuse of “suspicion of shoplifting”. This excuse shows the worker trying to disguise her racism for the purpose of consumerism. The worker used phrases such as “people like her” and “go back to your neighborhood”. This woman has literally done nothing wrong yet she was being frisked and harassed. Unfortunately, there were many people who chose not to step in or sided with the workers. By not stepping in, you are contributing to the problem. It is disgusting that seeing this type of disrespect and humiliation that some people felt like it was okay to let it go; there is no excuse for this. There are also more subtle ways of racism when shopping that wasn’t shown in the video; being following around, talked down to by employees, being ignored, etc. This video connects to the Walmart incident because black people are being targeted for participating in the consumer culture. The boy said, “all blacks must leave the store”. He has been taught this racism, possibly through marketing, and was maliciously making an attack on an entire race. Regardless if he was joking or not, it is fair to charge him. Racism isn’t a joke and especially when you take it to that level, you cannot use that as an excuse. Situations like this really happen so people are going to take them seriously. Also, this is a 16 year old boy. He needs to be shown that racism will not be tolerated. If he gets let off for this, this will engrain the idea that this type of behavior is acceptable. These situations show us that the consumerism culture is not doing a good job of protecting black people, or any colored people for that matter.
