Tata Motors is a global automobile manufacturing company that makes cars, sport vehicles, trucks, buses, and defense vehicles, and is owned by Ratan Tata. They are India’s largest vehicle maker and has over 44 billion dollars in revenue. Tata is also the owner of Jaguar and Land Rover Marques. Tata created the worlds cheapest car, called the Nano, in hopes that he is able to bring car ownership to the million’s of poor but aspirational families in India. The car’s basic model will sell for roughly $2,500, not costing much more than the motorbikes sold in the country. Tata Motors are successfully targeting the low end of the auto market by developing this car. The Nano has inexpensive fuel cost, and maintenance costs. Although the car was developed for poor, or lower-class families, it was not always purchased by the people it was intended for. Many people began to purchase the Nano for its novelty value, eventually making the car ‘a grown up toy’ and a fun car to drive. Because of the Nano’s great quality, price, and fun factor, it is able to reach both the low and high end auto markets.

Tata Motors is also able to reach the high end auto markets because they are the owners of Jaguar Land Rover. Jaguar Land Rover is a luxury motor vehicle company, and is a subsidiary of Tata Motors. Because Tata Motors produces both economical and luxury cars, the company is able to reach both low and high ends of the auto market.

TATA 150 claims that Tata Motors is India's largest automobile company, with consolidated revenues of Rs1,88,818 crores (USD 34.7 billion) in 2012-13. Through subsidiaries and associate companies, Tata Motors has operations in the UK, South Korea, Thailand, Spain, South Africa and Indonesia. Among them is Jaguar Land Rover, the business comprising the two iconic British brands. Following a strategic alliance with Fiat in 2005, it has set up an industrial joint venture with Fiat Group Automobiles to produce both Fiat and Tata cars and Fiat powertrains. The company, formerly known as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company, began manufacturing commercial vehicles in 1954 with a 15-year collaboration agreement with Daimler Benz of Germany. According to the FT, at the New Delhi Auto Expo in 2008 the star attraction was Tata Motors’ Nano, a tiny vehicle billed as the world’s cheapest car, with a planned selling price of just Rs100,000 — the equivalent of $2,600 at the time. The pet project of group chairman Ratan Tata, the car generated an international buzz over its potential to bring millions of lower middle-class Indian families into the automotive market but the Nano proved an expensive failure, and its launch kicked off a decade of decline for Tata Motors’ core domestic operation, cushioned only by the strong performance of its UK subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover. It was a painful reversal for Tata Motors — the biggest unit by revenue of India’s largest conglomerate, Tata Sons — and it came as competition hotted up among global carmakers in a key growth market. The decline forced Tata to consider shuttering its domestic passenger car business and focusing on the larger truck making operation.
