Assignment: Think about your work place, or a unit where you did clinicals in school. Describe some of the barriers and facilitators you witnessed to the implementation of evidence-based practice. What strategies would you suggest to overcome these barriers?

Here are some examples of barriers and facilitators:

Barriers:

• Time
• Financial resources
• Limited access to literature
• Lack of experience of staff with EBP process
• Lack of interest
• Unwillingness to change
• Lack of organizational value in the EBP process
• Limited authority or power to make changes
• Lack of EBP mentors

Facilitators:

• Growing accessibility to access to literature
• Increasing positive attitudes towards change
• Increased emphasis on quality of care provided and adherence with best practices
• Organizational culture that supports change
• Availability of EBP mentors
• Staff/unit level champions
• Multidisciplinary collaboration
