1. Statement of the Problem

The problem statement describes the issue that you will address. Effective problem statements answer the question: why does this grant proposal need to be funded?

It is important that the problem stand out – that the reader/grantmaker can easily recognize the problem. This statement must be presented within a context, and that context should be provided and briefly explained, including a discussion of the conceptual or theoretical framework in which it is embedded.

Remember to state the problem in an understandable manner – write as if the person is relatively uninformed about your area of investigation.

2. Review of the Literature

The literature review provides the background and context for your problem. It should establish the need for the research and indicate that you are knowledgeable about your proposed project.

The literature review should demonstrate to the reader/grantmaker that you have a comprehensive grasp of the field and are aware of important recent substantive developments. This review must be relevant to the purpose of your project.

Please be brief and to the point, and include references.

For the PURPOSE of the STUDY, please include a purpose statement. This statement should provide a specific and accurate synopsis of the overall purpose of the study. Briefly define the specific area of the research.

When preparing a purpose statement, please keep in mind to incorporate a sentence that begins with "The purpose of this study is to…"

Also, clearly identify and define the central concepts or ideas of the study.

Identify the specific methods you will use.
