PHA’s (potentially hazardous asteroids) observed and detected by performing Near Earth Object Observation Program tells us that we have many asteroids that have the potential to collide with the earth (Airapetian, 2014). According to the video provided by the B612 Foundation they explain that from 2000-2013 twenty six asteroids collided with the Earth’s atmosphere with explosions that ranged from 1 kilotons to 600 kilotons, which surpasses the explosion of the 15 kilotons of the Hiroshima bomb. (VideoFromSpace, 2014) Scientist also know that objects measuring to 500m carry over 10x more energy than all the nuclear weapons currently in storage on Earth (Airapetian, 2014)

It was discovered beneath the peninsula of Yucatan, Mexico, the site of where the asteroid that may have killed the dinosaurs, left a crater 180 kilometers(590551 feet or approx. 111 miles) in size (The Discovery Channel, 2015) Currently right now Eros the largest asteroid, measuring up to 33km long and 13km wide. If an asteroid of 1km creates a crater of 10km diameter in size (6.2miles) then Eros could leave a crater three times that and depending on the speed of the impact, and location, this impact could be devastating to our world. There are about 1,000 asteroids that the Nasa Space grad is aware of that, if successful with the collision of the earth could cause tidal waves, or devastations to full cities (The Discovery Channel, 2015). Luckily the foundation that is observing our PHAs are using IR to map the asteroid, allowing us to know of its arrival many years in advance so that we can deflect its course to Earth (VideoFromSpace, 2014)

Studies show that Earth is enduring more dangerous asteroid impacts than originally thought. The worst part being that the asteroids were not detected until they reached Earth’s Atmosphere. There was a study carried out by the B612 foundation where the foundation's CEO (and former shuttle pilot) Dr. Ed Lu stated “While most large asteroids with the potential to destroy an entire country or continent have been detected, less than 10,000 of the more than a million dangerous asteroids with the potential to destroy an entire major metropolitan area have been found by all existing space or terrestrially operated observatories," he concluded "Because we don't know where or when the next major impact will occur, the only thing preventing a catastrophe from a 'city-killer' sized asteroid has been blind luck.” (Thomas, 2014)

The impact could be more devastating than a nuclear bomb just like the one that hit and caused the dinosaur extinction that was more powerful than any nuclear bombs used to date. Mass x Acceleration = force, the friction turns in to a fireball and burns brighter than the surface of the sun.

Kinetic energy is calculated by the equation KE=1/2 x m x velocity squared and without the mass being stated and me being terrible at math, I am going to have to say that I do not know how much kinetic energy it would be striking earth at 20km/s. If anyone would like to assist if I am missing something, please feel free.

Unfortunately I cannot compare the two because I couldn’t figure out the first question to be able to compare. I will research further and possibly add to this later but I need to get this posted so I can participate in this week’s discussions.

The first thing that I would like to see if I were to visit Mars, would be Valles Marineris. Valles Marineris is a system of canyons and is the largest canyon in the solar system at 2,500 miles. Spanning 20 percent of the planet, in some areas the canyon stretches to 125 miles wide and 6 miles deep. To give you an idea of how big this is it would reach from Los Angeles to the Atlantic coast. The Noctis Labyrinthus region, which is made up of maze-like valleys and canyons, is the start of the Valles Marineris and it extends to the Chryse region, this is one of the lowest regions of Mars. The Valles Marineris is home to volcanoes and chasmata, “steep depressions that resemble canyons on Earth” (Redd, 2017). These chasmata are home to lava flows and faults and others contain volcanic ash and eroded material

  • Assume for a moment that you have been fortunate enough to be selected to brave the cold and participate in a manned mission to Mars. Which of Mar's magnificent geological features would you want to visit first? Describe your choice in detail.

A mission to Mars may is not as far away as it seems. I have heard several theories on the subject discussing the importance of having a cohesive team. I have thought about this trip often, and I would want to be stationed in the Cydonia region of the planet. This is where the location of the famous “Face on Mars” is. According to NASA Science website (2001), “Cydonia is littered with mesas like the Face. MOLA can measure the heights of things with a vertical precision of 20 to 30 cm” (https://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2001/ast24may_1, n.p.). This particular feature of Mars is one that has the possibility of showing us if life had existed at one point on the red planet. Although, the “Face on Mars” is speculative it is not proven that is was not something that was created. Much like Stonehenge in England, many artifacts were found near the sight. The “Face on Mars” seems to be a promising area of discovery. I chose this area because of the familiarity with many of the Henges found throughout the Earth.

A mission to Mars would not be as simple as gathering into a “rocket” and heading over for a three-year journey to Mars. Not only would time need to be considered, but food, entertainment, gravity, exercise, and compatibility. The people I would be traveling with would need to have the same passion and hypothesis about the “Face on Mars” as I do. I believe we would be able to study the area and discover other things that would lead us to an ancient civilization.
