STUDENT ONE:

Starbucks has an open network, and I occasionally go, order my coffee, and sit down with my tablet. Since Starbucks offers free wi-fi, it can be a significant threat to packet sniffing. Typically, if I go to Amazon.com, as Kroenke & Boyle mentions, the browser sends a demand that moves over the Internet to a computer in the server tier at the Amazon site. In acknowledgment to my request, a server-tier computer transfers back a web page, which is a document coded in. However, since public Wi-Fi can be shaped to launch man-in-the-middle attacks – where someone changes vital parts of the network traffic or redirects your exchange to the wrong place. I might think I am on the site, but actually, I am connecting to the hackers copy server created to catch your username and password. (Kroenke & Boyle, 2017)

A bigger concern is my mobile phone, and the various apps that have been enabled to track me; it's pretty creepy when you think about it. For example, I am looking to visit the Grand Canyon, I typed lodging using my mobile internet, and a day later I have deals on my Facebook and Instagram pages. In another instance, I was baking and made a mess. My laptop was open since I was looking at the recipe; the next day I have lifehack articles on how to bake with no mess. So my mobile, laptop or a business with an open network (like Starbucks) are excellent opportunities for hackers to steal information and passwords.

STUDENT TWO:

For my profession I occasionally travel. When I am on the road I always connect to the hotel WIFI to save data or use my laptop. My computer is for work only, so the packet sniffer might get a little board looking at my computer information. However, I use my phone for my personal email and whatever social media I am involved with. I think a hotel is a hot bed for packet sniffing due to the amount of information going in and out of the hotel over their network. How packet sniffing is done starts when a Wardriver takes computers that have wireless connections through an area and search for unprotected wireless networks. After they find the unprotected wireless network they then use packet sniffers to monitor and intercept traffic on the network. It is a simple as that that a person can get into your device and get your instant messages, your email, and your web browser traffic. This can only happen on an unprotected wireless network, so everyone needs to be a little safer out there on the world wide web.

STUDENT THREE:

Franchises are a vital part to economic growth. An informal definition of a franchise is a business model that allows individuals to individually run an established brand. Scarborough & Cornwall (2015) state that “many franchisees say that buying a franchise is like going into business for yourself, but not by yourself” (pg. 167). A formal definition according to Patrick Gleeson (2018):

“is a business owned by an entrepreneur or an entrepreneurial group, offering a product or service labeled by a corporation that provides assistance in every aspect of the business, in return for a combination of a flat fee, plus fees based on profits or sales” (para. 1)

The Three Types of Franchises and Examples

There are three types of franchises according, which are trade-name, product distribution, and pure (Scarborough & Cornwall, 2015, pg. 168). Trade-name franchising consists of identification of a brand name but not forced to distribute their products. Examples of trade-name franchises are Domino’s, Pizza Hut, and Dunkin’ Donuts. Product Distribution franchising consists of distributing “specific products under the manufactures brand name and trademark, through a selective, limited distribution network” (Scarborough & Cornwall, 2015, pg. 168). Examples of product distribution franchises are John Deere, Ford, Chrysler, and Good-Year tires. The Pure franchising or business format franchise is a combination of trade-name and product distribution but also includes developed operating procedures. Many of the examples used for trade-name will provide a business format option.

Describe the three types of franchising and provide an example of each.

Let’s begin with defining franchise – a semi-independent business owners (franchisees) pay fees and royalties to a parent company (franchisor) in return for the right to become identified with its trademark, to sell its products or services, and often to use its business format and system. Scarborough states, that there are three types of franchises; they are Trade-name, Product distribution, and Pure Franchising (Scarborough, 2015). For this discussion, I would like to try to elaborate a little on each.

1. Trade name franchise is one in which the entrepreneur purchases the right to be identified with the franchisors trade name without distributing particular products exclusively. An example of this would be True Value Hardware. You purchase your right to call your store True Value Hardware and associate yourself with their brand name; however, you are not required to sell specific products in order to do so (Scarborough, 2015).
2. Product Distribution Franchise is when the entrepreneur purchases a license that allows them to sell specific products under the manufacturers brand name (Scarborough, 2015). An example of this type of franchise is Mercedes Benz automobiles. There are many Ford motor company & Exxon which the entrepreneur is authorized to sell their product (Massetti, 2013).
3. Pure Franchise – this is where you obtain a complete business format, including the license for a trade name and product or services to be sold, store or building design marketing plan and methods of operations as well as quality control process (Scarborugh, 2015). Some famous example of this format would be Dunkin Donuts, or Mcdonalds (Massetti, 2013).
