Class: Great point on the purpose of diversity training. Since a person views on subjects like diversity are rooted in past experiences, beliefs and values it is not possible to provide training that will make someone change. So the goal of diversity training should not be to change people. But what can be done is to raise the awareness level of the training participants as to how they view diversity and why they have the perceptions they do on the topic. Through awareness of topics like stereotyping people can then make their own decisions on the behaviors that result. Awareness will help people understand what their stereotypes are and how they act because of them. For example, if I have always known tall people that were good at basketball and loved the sport I would view all tall people as basketball playing individuals. Through more awareness I can see how that stereotype is based on my past experience and does not hold true for all tall people.

You also made very important points on the benefits to diversity training. It can lead to a more accepting work environment and positive work relationships. There is a saying hanging in my office that states "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts". That means together a work force is smarter, better and more productive when all employees are included than if only some are valued and allowed to contribute.
