PROMPT: Regarding citizenship by place of birth (i.e., jus soli), Rodriguez writes that:

"[Citizenship by place of birth] is not… perfectly egalitarian because it rests on an arbitrary distriction between persons born on opposite sides of a border. The rule is clearly under-inclusive because many persons not born in the United States are de facto members of our society and yet are not automatically entitled to citizenship. And, it is also over-inclusive in that it makes citizens many people who who will form no relationship to the United States — a limitation that we accept largely because we understand the rule to be a prophylactic one, or one designed to prevent castes from arising. But that the anti-inheritance principle does not produce globally egalitarian results should not reduce our commitment to reading the Fourteenth Amendment, as it governs the United States as a polity, as inclusively as possible, and thus without regard to parentage."

In the case of Wong Kim Ark, his parents were excluded from naturalization, but he himself was ultimately allowed citizenship. Today, a child born in the United States receives birthright citizenship, yet their parents are still excluded from naturalization if they are undocumented. Based on your readings and research, does the idea of birthright citizenship require revisiting? Furthermore, what should be the role of Asian American communities in addressing these issues, when most of the discussion is centered on migration from Latin American countries? Does birthright citizenship and continuing debates around immigration still have relevance for Asian Americans today? Why or why not?
