Thesis/Seminar Paper Requirements for HURD 806(Chapters 1 – 2):

Structuring Your Paper:

Each type of scholarly paper has basic structure requirements. However, there is wiggleroom to adjust your paper to meet the standards of your topic and audience. Below are generalsections that will need to be included in your paper depending on the type of paper you arewriting. Don’t forget to reference the APA Manual (current edition).

Structure of a Seminar Paper

Title And Cover Page:

The title of your research paper should state your topic exactly in the smallest possiblenumber of words. Put your name, the name of your department, and the name of your universityunder the title. The cover page restates the above and includes Department Coordinator andInstructor names and signatures.

Acknowledgements:

The acknowledgement is the writer’s opportunity to honor those who have contributed tohis or her completion and or success of writing the research paper. Those who offered assistanceand support in any shape or form.

Table of Contents:

The Table of Contents begins with page iii or iv, depending on the length of the abstract.The TOC must have entries for the abstract, list of tables, list of figures, chapters with theirnumbers and titles, main headings and subheadings, appendices, and reference list. The TOCshould match the headings and subheadings of the seminar/thesis/dissertation chapters exactly.The page number should be printed at the bottom center of the TOC pages.

List of Tables/List of Figures :

These are included when necessary and the formatting should be similar to that of theTable of Contents.

Chapter I:

Introduction:

The first section should be an introduction to your topic. This section you shoulddemonstrate your ability to write a scholarly paper. You should review the background of yourtopic and give an outline of the contents of your paper. In this section you are expected to presenta broad review of the literature of the topic of study synthesizing the major theories in therespective knowledge domains. While seminal data may be important, the vast majority of theliterature cited should be current (within four years of the date of the paper).

Statement of the Problem:

The problem statement is the very core of the document. It must be clearly written to showthe reader the direction of the research. The statement of the problem is usually seen written inone of two ways. One way that is often seen is in the form of a question. This method is veryeffective for a few reasons:1. The reader can clearly understand that the purpose of this work is to answer thisparticular question clearly and entirely.2. The researcher has really narrowed down the topic to show where the focus of thedocument is going to be for his/her own clarity.If the reader is not clear on the expectations of the document, then it will be much morechallenging for the reader to achieve follow and/or understand the document.

Purpose of the Study :

The purpose of the study must be made clear to the reader. The researcher has a large taskto help all readers understand why this particular research is important and worth their time toread. The researcher is urged to look at this section as a mock debate. The researcher mustdebate the issue that this topic is important, while the readers do not feel that it is. This willproduce a very persuasive argument thus making this section a successful part of the document.

Research Questions:

If you use research questions they would be placed here in the document. Such questionshelp point out to the reader, some of the key issues that will be covered. Research questions mustbe answered in the document in the same order that they appear in the document.

Need for the Study:

This section should point out clearly why and how the study will add valuableinformation to the topic or add to the society’s general knowledge on the subject. It is importantto understand the difference between the Purpose of the Study and the Need for the Study. Thereare two different sections of the document and should be presented as such. Both of thesesections should flow together with the purpose of the study setting the foundation for the needfor the study.

Theoretical Framework:

A theoretical framework consists of concepts, together with their definitions, and existingtheory/theories that are used for your particular study. The theoretical framework mustdemonstrate an understanding of theories and concepts that are relevant to the topic ofyour research paper and that will relate it to the broader fields of knowledge in this class. Thissection should address 2-3 HRD related theories.

Limitations:

“Limitations” are influences the researcher cannot control – instruments utilized, sample,time constraints. For instance: This seminar paper is a literature review of peer reviewed articlesand journals spanning the last 15 years of publication. Delimitations:
