Question Description
The Tau Family
Adults:
Grandmother, age 55, is the head of housekeeping at a local motel chain. She works Monday through Friday, 6am to 2pm. She is caring for her three grandchildren while her daughter serves a 5-year prison sentence. She is very active in her neighborhood and elementary school organizations, and, although she is a widow, she has a large extended family in the community.
Dependents:
The oldest granddaughter is 13 years old and attends the middle school located approximately 1 mile from their home. She enjoys reading, television, and spending time with her friends and cousins in the neighborhood.
The middle granddaughter is 9 years old and attends the neighborhood elementary school 3 blocks from their home. She enjoys playing with neighboring children, YMCA sports programs, and riding her bike.
The youngest grandson is 7 years old and attends a school for children with special needs; it is across town. He has behavioral and developmental disorders and requires medication and therapy treatments. He enjoys walks in the park, playing with toys, and listening to music.
Strengths of the family:
The children receive state assistance and Medicaid. Food stamps and other economic programs can be accessed to assist with their care. The grandmother has a close neighbor who stays with the children in the morning and makes sure they get to school. The grandmother, in turn, picks up this neighbor’s children after school and watches them until early evening. When the grandfather died 3 years ago, an insurance policy on the mortgage paid for the house entirely. The home is a small three-bedroom, 50 year-old bungalow. It is valued at 3 times her annual gross income. There is also a 15 year-old sedan that was given to the grandmother by an uncle of her late husband. Health and life insurance are available through her employer for reduced rates. She also has accumulated a retirement savings equal to 3 times her annual gross income and continues to contribute 3% to that fund monthly.
Challenges of the family: Believing that her daughter was innocent of charges, she took out a personal loan against her home for 30% of its value to pay for legal defense. This loan has an 8% interest rate and is payable over a 10-year period. The 15 year-old sedan has been having serious mechanical problems. The daughter/mother is incarcerated 250 miles away, and the family tries to visit her at least twice a month.
