In this discussion, we'll watch the video called "A Girl Like Me" to hear from young Black women and girls and boys. The video begins with a brief poetry clip before "A Girl Like Me" begins to play, but be patient. After watching the video, prepare a 250-300 word essay responding to the following items.

1. How has selective exposure to media clearly impacted these women’s perceptions of beauty?
2. What specific recommendations can you make to encourage the media to help young women change their attitudes, beliefs, and values about the beauty of skin color?

The Sioux are aligned into three bands with three distinct native dialects, the Lakota, the Dakota, and Nakota. In this discussion activity, you will learn more about the Lakota Sioux and efforts that seek to preserve their culture.

To begin this activity, visit the Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center to learn about the tribe' s legends, rites, and beliefs.

Then, watch the following short video, St. Joseph’s Indian School – Cultural Preservation Fund, which focuses on efforts to preserve Lakota cultural heritage.

After reviewing the Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center’s website and the video, write an 250-300 word essay about the preservation program. Address the following in your essay:

1. How does this program seek to preserve cultural heritage?
2. Knowing how culture is transmitted generationally, what is the threat to the culture if preservation efforts fail?
3. To what degree do you believe media representations of Native Americans impact on people of their culture and on society as a whole?
