Putting on the uniform as I did in the Coast Guard as well as any Law Enforcement officer comes from different backgrounds and biases. Schmalleger (2017) states,"No discussion of crime and of the criminal justice system would be complete without considering the causes of crime and deviance, and the idea that certain types of music lead to law violation" (p.73). Even what you might think is the smallest prejudice such as music could be someone's biggest pet peeve and set an officer in uniform over the edge. This process all begins with making the decision to arrest by a law enforcement officer in the field. Officers must attempt to choose any alternate means to diffuse any situation from escalating.
Using discretion is a huge part to law enforcement. Officers have taken an oath to follow state stautes and agency policy and procedures while making these decisions. In the book of Proverbs is the fact that truths give "discretion" to young people. According to Proverbs 1:4 (King James Version) [KJV] "To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion." Scripture is telling me discretion is for the person's preservation or protection. Bronitt (2011) states, "Many individuals suffer loss and have no form of protection within their lives due to them lacking discretion". Schmalleger (2017) claims, "Americans watch the news on television, in music, and on film. Experts study states an American child watches 8,000 murders and 100,000 acts of violence while growing up" (p.74). An officer knows his or her own limitations dealing with society and has to make sure they see things through an unbiased lens every day. The scripture in proverbs helps others within authority to protect and defend by discernment between Godly decisions and foolish decisions.
