Before you begin, remember that a theme is something that has a universal message; therefore, we can all relate. If we look at “The Story of an Hour” and say the theme is going to entail gender equality or loss of independence, what would the universal message be? That is your theme.
Here is a handout to review common themes, but don't limit yourself: Common Themes in Literature.
1. Discussion Forum Instructions:
Respond to the following questions by Thursday and use an academic tone:
Make sure to number your responses and add a word count at the end.
"The Story of an Hour"
- What is the nature of the conflict in the story "The Story of an Hour"? Who, or what, do you see as Mrs. Mallard’s antagonist? Remember to cite evidence.
- "The Story of an Hour" is a very economical story, with little action or dialogue. Is this economy a strength or a weakness? Explain with evidence.
- What is a possible theme for this story? Explain fully with specific evidence. Remember that the theme is more than just one word.
Make sure to post your own, original responses by Thursday. Remember that you will not be able to see others responses until you have posted your own. Also, make sure to cite your evidence in MLA format like this: Chopin writes, “She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death” (105). Review how to cite in MLA format if you have forgotten how. 105 refers to the page number in the book. If you are using the online source, use the paragraph number like this: (par. 5).
