1. This week's video was entertaining. Leyla Acaroglu did a great job explaining sustainability. I particularly like when she described the use of biofuels which were created from biological resources. The government had great intentions by passing a legislation to encourage biofuel use however didn't realize the effect it would have on the world. Over the years there was a food shortage as a result and prices rose due to the use of wheat and corn to produce biofuels. Rainforests were also cleared out. In my opinion her example explains exactly why we need environmental sustainability. Its great to know life cycle assessments are being done on emerging products. I found another good example in the textbook that highlighted eBay. I used to do a lot of shopping on eBay but had no idea that the website helped the environment in a way. The use of eBay "extends the life of products traded and reduces our consumption of new goods." I can honestly say I never considered the environmental impact of a product I use aside from the plastic six pack holders that we are all told chokes dolphins if we don't cut them. I can't honestly say that I will never use products that are bad for the environment however after this week I will definitely have those thoughts in the back of my mind.

2. I think a main point that I took away from Leyla Acaroglu, was that sustainability has many different meanings, but one important meaning is that we need to treat our environment better as the years go on. She was saying that we need to come up with plans for the future as to how we can me more environmental. For example, she mentioned how sustaining ethanol is bad for the environment because of how many pipelines are used in the process. Which we then get into the problem of adding costs with each pipeline that is added into the process. She talks about how recently we have tried to become more environmental to come up with more efficient ways for things like alternative fuels. Her main point is that looking into the future we can make more environmentally aware decisions as to how we can move forward, so that we aren’t hurting the environment as much as we have in the past. She brought up so many great points as to how we can help in such little ways like changing the clothing that we wear. This got me thinking and I decided to do more research on how our clothes affect our environment. I found out that “a typical washing machine emits 160 pounds of carbon dioxide each year” (Roshell). This fact was just so hard to believe that in a way I know that it is right. I think that sustainability can make a major difference on how we live our lives in the future, and can help us for the most part.
