#13. FFPS Module 7 discusses “Acknowledging Holidays.” What is the difference between proportional and equal? Several examples are provided of legal and appropriate acknowledgement of holidays in public schools. What other examples can you share that might also be legal and appropriate?

I understand that Holidays are opportunities to teach about Judeo-Christian history, principles, and values. The difference between proportional and equal is that Equal means they're the same versus proportional that means they have the same degree of change. Fairness means all religions must be given equal time in the classroom. Fairness sometimes means proportional, not equal. For example; Senators based on population, Teachers pay based on experience and years of service and how everyone pays the same amount of money in restaurant buffet lines regardless of how people eat different amounts of food. According to Graham, “all teachers fulfil the role of a prophet by knowing and interpreting in some way, a Christian teacher fulfils that role by knowing and interpreting ideas and experiences through the Scriptures” (p. 128).

I believe the Bible is relevant to many topics taught, and that it is our duty as educators to teach relevant information and to be able to identify what is important to use from the Bible based on our lessons. The Bible is relevant during many lessons including; evolution verse creationism, in science describing the difference between random chance and intelligent design, and during math when talking about the origins of money. The Bible is also appropriate when teaching about cultural language arts, history, and economics (Buehrer, Faith, Freedom, and Public Schools Online Module). During a science or philosophy teaching on evolution and creation, you can refer to scriptures such as Genesis 1:1 says, In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (NKJV). It is absolutely right and legal to teach about the Bible and Judeo-Christian history as long as it is non-devotional and objective. To teach concerning religion is not to the same as instructed in religion as teaching about religions includes a variety of religions, information on past and present references, views, and behavior of religious persons or groups; and the impact of religion on cultures and civilizations. It is legal and good to encourage students to consider their faith-based when making decisions as it helps them to have a sense of guidance and security.
