Classical Period Discussion Question
Watch and LISTEN to the 1st movement of Beethoven's Symphony #1. I expect students to figure out the beginning and ending points of the first movement of a Symphonic piece.

The conductor is Daniel Barenboim. He is one of the best interpreters of the music of Beethoven of our time. He is conducting the West-Eastern Divan Youth Orchestra. Here is the wikipedia page with the orchestra's information.

In Beethoven's early period of compostion (which includes the first two symphonies), he is emulating the classical style established by Haydn and Mozart, while at the same time 'hinting' at musical concepts that will come to fruition in his later works.
In two long paragraphs, describe how many of the musical elements that are typical of the Classical era are evident in this work. The first movement closely follows the form of Sonata Allegro (which is typical in the first movement of Symphonies).
Focus on items such as contrasting themes, changes of tempo, changes of dynamics, melodies dispersed throughout the orchestra, climaxes, etc.
Also include an educated opinion on the music of Beethoven.
