Q1. In chapter 7 Tolstoy (see attached file) is in the mindset that to cope with our futile life humans have four ways of coping and he uses the metaphor of being stuck in a well above a dragon at the bottom. Here are the four ways he comes up with using his metaphor for the first two. 1. "They see neither the dragon that is waiting for them, nor the mice gnawing away at the bush from which they are clinging, and they lick the drops of honey.(pg 45)" 2. "enjoying the blessings we have without looking at the dragon or the mice, and of licking the honey in the best possible way(pg 45)". For number three he drops the metaphor, but it would be seeing that life isn't worth living and dropping down to the dragon beneath. The fourth and last way of coping is knowing how meaningless life is and still hanging on to the shrub for no real reason.
If religion is the only way to find meaning in life are non-religious people less happy than the ones who practice their faith? How do people cope in our time with not having meaning in their lives? Are they the same as the ones Tolstoy described?
Q2. Around pages 22-24 of our text, Tolstoy reflects on the relative lack of religiosity among people from his social milieu. According to him, scientific inquiry and life experience has lessened the credibility of religious doctrines, and so people no longer really believe in it. Many people 'go through the motions' of religious tradition, but it no longer has the 'grip' on people's lives that it used to.
Do you think that Tolstoy's comments apply to our societies today? According to census data, somewhere between 70% and 80% of Americans say they belief in God, and around 65% identify as "Christian." But does religious faith still have a 'grip' on American life? On the life of the world?
If so or if not, is this a bad thing? A good thing? Why or why not?
