Activity #15 – Creating an Android app to compute cost of a Goober ride

PROBLEM: My cousin Goober just created a new passenger company that is somewhat similar to existing services. He will give people a ride to anywhere in the county. His rates are based per passenger and the cost changes if you are traveling with other passengers. If you are traveling alone, the cost is 5 dollars plus 2 dollars per mile. If there are 2 or more passengers, each passenger must pay 2 dollars plus 1 dollar per mile. You should develop an app that will ask the user how many passengers there are, as well as how many miles to the destination. The app will compute and display the cost for each passenger.

For example, if 1 passenger went 5 miles, the cost would be: $5 + 5x$2 = $15

If 3 passengers went 5 miles, each passenger would pay: $2 + 5x$1 = $7

For this activity, we will solve this problem in three steps:

PART #1:

• Create an algorithm that solves this problem. Be sure your algorithm meets all the essential properties of an algorithm (inputs, outputs, etc.).

PART #2:

• Using Draw.IO, create a flowchart to model the solution to this problem.
• Be sure to use the correct shapes as previously directed.
• You must include a text box in your flowchart with your name, etc. as done previously.
• Export your flowchart as a PNG image.
• Using App Inventor, create an app that solves this problem.
• Use a 2×2 table to accept the user inputs. Have a button that will compute and display the pay. Use a horizontal layout for the output and show the pay using 2 decimal places.
