Question Description
Essay 3 – This paper will be five double-spaced paragraphs, for a total of 2 ½ pages.Your paper will follow a similar format (a variation of They say, I say). This time, however, you will write about a social issue from a less personal – more objective – perspective.Although you may use “I” in this paper (and may use “I” in any of our papers where it seems ok), this paper will be written more objectively – that is, with less emphasis on the “I.”
Assignment: choose one of the following to write about:
- The driving age to be changed from sixteen to eighteen
- Making texting and driving illegal
- Legalization of marijuana
- Lowering the legal drinking age to eighteen
Paragraph 1 – In this paragraph, which will be ½ page long, you will begin by writing a general introduction to your topic before getting to the two points you will argue. This introduction will be as simple as describing the topic (see example below) and will be ½ – ¾ of the entire first paragraph.Next, in the same paragraph, you will state two points you will argue in two separate sentences. Then you will state an opposing view (what they say, in effect). You will then finish the paragraph by winning back the argument.
Example of paragraph 1 – Suppose I were to write on the topic of raising the speed limit nationally to 75 mph.I would begin, as stated above, with a general introduction to the topic, and that can be as simple as describing the topic or situation (the introduction part, two paragraphs below, is in italics).
After the general introduction, you must have a transition sentence that gets you to the specific point of the paper (that sentence is, below, I really do wish I could drive faster legally, and I think the speed limit should be raised nationally). The two points begin with One reason and Another reason and are in BOLD.The “They say” concession point is “It is true that many people argue that speed kills,” and then the writer wins back the concession with the rest of the paragraph “but then why not lower all speed limits if the public is so concerned? And if that argument doesn’t seem far-fetched, there is nothing wrong with making certain highways or lanes with a higher speed limit, and states can even make money from such speed, by charging those people who use such travel routes.”(All quotes, italics, bold, and underlines are mine, for emphasis – please don’t put them in your papers):
It is no secret that Americans have a love and fascination for automobiles.Teens can’t wait to get their drivers’ license, and once a teen gets that license it seems the obsession with cars never ends.I know that I myself began by wanting only to be able to get my license, but then once I got my license I wanted to use my mother’s car all the time. From there I wanted to have my own car, and after I got my own car, a used VW, I had to have a nicer car.So I finally bought myself a new Honda, a very dependable car, but after a while I felt I needed more speed and more prestige.I bought a used BMW and that was great until I became obsessed with having a new BMW, which meant even more speed. It also meant traffic tickets.I really do wish I could drive faster legally, and I think the speed limit should be raised nationally. One reason the speed limit should be raised is because if companies such as BMW are permitted to make fast cars, then people should be able to use that speed, and certainly other countries, such as Germany, have roads where there is no speed limit.Another reason to raise the speed limit is simply to get to where I want to go faster. It is true that many people argue that speed kills, but then why not lower all speed limits if the public is so concerned? And if that argument doesn’t seem far-fetched, there is nothing wrong with making certain highways or lanes with a higher speed limit, and states can even make money from such speed, by charging those people who use such travel routes.
Paragraph 2 – In this paragraph, which will be a ½ page long, you will begin by re-stating your first point from paragraph 1: One reason the speed limit should be raised is because if companies such as BMW are permitted to make fast cars, then people should be able to use that speed, and certainly other countries, such as Germany, have roads where there is no limit to the speed a car can go.The rest of this paragraph will go into greater detail regarding that sentence.
Paragraph 3 – In this paragraph, which will be a ½ page long, you will begin by restating your second point from paragraph 1: Another reason to raised the speed limit is simply to get to where I want to go faster. The rest of this paragraph will explain, in detail, that sentence.
Paragraph 4 – In this paragraph, which will also be a ½ page long, you will begin by re-stating your “They say” or concession sentence: It is true that many people argue that speed kills.NOW you must explain that point of view.It cannot be just one sentence.Don’t be afraid to go into some detail, giving the point of view that “They say.”Do not use the Internet.Write the paper based on what you know, and certainly you know how many people die from others who go fast and race in their cars.Finish this paragraph by winning back the argument:But then why not lower all speed limits if the public is so concerned? And if that argument doesn’t seem far-fetched, there is nothing wrong with making certain highways or lanes with a higher speed limit, and states can even make money from such speed, by charging those people who use such travel routes. At this point you should further explain what you mean.Just describe what you mean – what you mean by having certain lanes with a higher speed limit, and what you mean by – how to – charge people for using higher-speed lanes.
Paragraph 5 – your summary paragraph.Begin by writing In summary.Sum up your two main ideas of the entire paper. You do not need to include the introduction to the essay. However, be certain to include your two main ideas (from paragraphs 2 and 3) and also include a few words about the concession and what your final view was/is in regard to that concession.
Write a total of 2 ½ pages.
