The term "creative destruction," sometimes called "creative disruption," has been discussed in MBA curricula for a long time in describing various components of the economy. The term was coined by the economist Joseph Schumpeter in 1942, and has been used in analyzing industries going through great change…a perfect example is the domestic automotive industry. Clearly, the thinking that brought us the Ford Pinto of the 70's had to be "blown up" in order for improvement to occur.
