For extra credit, write a 1-2 page POV position paper on a contemporary EEO or Diversity topic.

The requirements are:

• Express a clear, concise opinion about the topic.
• Offer 3 compelling, substantial arguments or proof points to support your opinion.

Characteristics of compelling, substantial arguments/proof points:

• Support your opinion with material from the text, Echo presentation, or additional module materials.
• Support your opinion with a reference to at least one resource outside of the class materials provided.The strongest papers often have 3-5 or more references
• Relate your own personal experience to support your POV (if possible).

• Summary paragraph.

Equal opportunity is the law. However, we fall short of offering truly equal opportunity within the United States.

Focus on an example of discrimination, bias against a protected class: gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, veterans, race, age in the workplace. Remember that discrimination can appear in any term or condition of employment: hiring, pay, promotions, treatment, termination, etc.

Find research that proves its existence and quantifies its impact.

Write a summary of the discrimination: who is impacted, why it occurs, any proof points about the results of the inequality.

Summarize any laws or regulations that should prevent this type of discrimination.

Offer your opinion about why it still occurs and what could be done by employers or law makers to rectify it.

The most successful topics focus on a very specific expression of bias or discrimination in the workplace.

So, instead of gender discrimination as a whole:

• Lack of female leaders at the C-level or BOD level
• Pay inequities in “pink color” professions.

Or instead of racial bias in total:

• Bias against African American-sounding names in resume screens
• Implicit biases for women of color in science, technology and engineering jobs.

Others have focussed on analysis of recent trends/news events/legislation:

• The recent outcry against sexual harassment
• States passing laws to add additional protected classes: sexual orientation, gender identity, etc.
• “Ban the Box” campaign to reduce discrimination against applicants with criminal records.

One of the learning goals of this class includes becoming familiar with a variety of high-quality sources for best practices, research, trends. You will impress a future employer if you stay well-read and informed about your profession and business in general.

The key to finding good resources for this purpose is to go beyond a Google search by subject.

You’ll need to peruse online sites and perhaps offline publications in the library to get rich data.

Once you know these sources of excellent information about best practices in business, you’ll be able to return to them again and again for your college coursework and ongoing professional development.

Newspapers: New York Times, Washington Post, WSJ. Many of these have paywalls. You can typically read up to 10 articles for free or use the WSU library portal.

Business magazines: Wired, Fast Company, Fortune, Harvard Business Review, etc.

Consulting firm white papers and online publications: McKinsey, Bersin, Towers Watson, Mercer, etc. The Wayne State library also subscribes to the Conference Executive Board. The CEB is considered one of the best sources for current research about all aspects of business. Corporate memberships are very expensive – – so this is a great time to check it out for free!

HR professional associations: ASTD, SHRM, World at Work, etc.

The end-of-chapter bibliographies in your text also provide extensive lists of source material, additional readings.
