1. Living conditions can cause children from culturally different backgrounds to experience academic difficulties and to be referred to special education. Discuss major contributors to the development of a child's learning problem. What major elements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) are relevant to the multicultural education of these children? How does this apply to the child's learning problem?

2. From a social/ecological system framework, describe some of the factors that may affect the family unit in response to the birth and continued presence of a child with a birth defect or disability? Many of these parents experience shock in response to the birth of a child with a disability. Discuss some of the feelings associated with the shock, and the factors that affect the duration of this stage. Describe how these factors present the unique difficulty of the mothers being over protective of a child with a disability as the child reaches late adolescence.
