Question Description
ECD 549 Case Study Julia Assignment Rubric
Now that you have read facts about ADHD, apply what you have learned. Read the case below about a girl named Julia. Remember cases offer opportunities to observe a situation based on actual events. If you think about the case and connect it to what you have read, it will be easier for you to understand how principles and theories from educational psychology and child development apply to young children you may work with. As you read the case pay particular attention to the who, what, where, and when it contains. These elements are important as you try to understand the reasons behind the events.
This case is adapted from Informing the ADHD Debate published in Scientific American Mind. It was written by Aribert Rothenberger and Tobias Banaschewski.
From the moment Julia entered kindergarten, she appeared to spend most of her time daydreaming. She needed more time to complete assignments than the other children did. As she moved into first grade, her emergent skills seems to stall and she began falling behind her peers. Julia found that following her teacher's instructions was difficult and concentrating on assignments impossible. Outside of school, Julia constantly lost her belongings, and homework became a battle of wills. Julia had few real friends and began complaining that her teacher did not like her. Julia complained that nothing she did was ever right. Julia's parents became frustrated and took her to their family physician, who referred them to a clinic that dealt with individuals with ADHD. Julia was tested and her neuropsychological exam showed that she was of average intelligence but had an attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
In a 2-3 page paper that addresses the following prompts in alignment to evidence from the course materials, respond to the following questions:
Imagine you are Julia's teacher and have just heard she has been diagnosed with ADHD. Keeping in mind that we are educators and not medical providers, what would you do? As a reminder, doctors diagnose children-we educate them. With that in mind, respond to the following:
- How would you support Julia academically?
- How would you support Julia socially/emotionally?
- What are some strategies you might use to strengthen the home-school partnership?
REFLECT AND USE WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED: Good answers contain data/information from the articles and websites you have read. Good answers show you know sound facts, can articulate your ideas, and that you have the ability to connect theory to practice.
