When it comes to professional nursing organizations, there are a plethora of associations to choose from. For example, one organization recommended for nurses is the American Nurses Association (ANA), the ANA “Advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.” (Housekeeper 2014) Professional organizations can help guide nurses by keeping nurses up to date with current evidenced based practices in their respective fields as well as provide many learning opportunities. It is vital to keep in communication with those in legislation who vote on passing bills, professional nursing organizations play a strong role on the legislator’s decision. “Each year, legislators at both the state and federal levels must wade through hundreds of bills that cover a broad range of issues. It is impossible for them to be knowledgeable about all issues and to completely understand each bill. This is where advocates can wield a lot of power by helping their own legislators to evaluate an issue and determine how they will ultimately vote on that issue.
