Characteristics are difficult to identify when it refers to domestic violence. However, a few examples that need special attention include, a change in behavior, such as a straight A student suddenly failing classes, recollection of events that are inconsistent among witnesses, or behavior that is violent in nature and reactive (Ellis, 1999). We have a question on every ER assessment that includes "Do you feel safe in your home?" I think the problem is, this question is being asked in the presence of the abuser and the victim may not answer truthfully. We have posters posted in the bathroom that give hotline numbers for victims to contact for help in a domestic abuse situation, we also have resources for shelters and safe houses. Our policy includes contacting authorities immediately if abuse is suspected or reported. I had a patient last year that stated she was raped one night while coming home from an ER visit by a "friend" that gave her a ride home. I had to call 911 immediately and the patient was held until her statement was taken. She didn't press charges so the man is still roaming free. She wouldn't give his name so it made it very difficult to help her.
