Following the scope of practice is important. As many things, scope of practice is changing and expanding, According to the American Nurses Association, “Scope of practice describes the services that a qualified health professional is deemed competent to perform, and permitted to undertake – in keeping with the terms of their professional license” (p. 1). Basically according to the ANA, scope of practice explains the five W’s of nursing practice: who, what, why, when, and where. So to determine whether the procedure falls within the RN scope of practice I would use a systematic approach. I would also discuss the procedure with other staff, especially floor staff. To make sure everyone is on the same page and believes the new procedure falls under the scope of practice. By discussing the new procedure I am showing the physicians’ and fellow nurses’ opinions are valuable. I would also have staff trainings so every staff knows about the new procedure and feels comfortable with it.
