The family structural theory views the family as one unit made up of various parts. A new marital relationship, parent and child relationships and values and beliefs from two prior family experiences. Personally, I am a child of divorce and married a divorced man (my first and only marriage). One thing that struck a cord with me with that how parents cope with stress and perceived crisis after a divorced has a significant impact on the adjustment of a new blended family. (Edelman & Kudzma, 2018).

As discussed by the American Psychological Association (APA), when divorced parents remarry, it can bring up unresolved feels of both adults and children. Depending on the age of the child, it can force him/her to give up hope of parental reconciliation (http://www.apa.org, 2018). I experienced this myself. My step son who was 12 when my husband and I got engaged, and he became very angry and started being argumentative and difficult with me. My husband finally realized he needed to explain to him what went wrong with him mom in simple and with limited detail and explain that even if I was never in the picture, he would not be reuniting with his mother. One of my rules was that there was never to be criticism of the ex-wife in front of the children. This made creating our blended family much easier.
