One of the leading issues in the different organizational level is nursing leadership. Both leaders and how they perform leadership are integral aspects of nursing management. Different situations present nursing leaders with challenges that may require distinct type style of leadership to deal with (Zydziunaite & Vilma, 2014).As per Marquis and Huston (2017) nursing leadership usually portray multiple styles of leadership, especially in the managerial roles. Some of the styles are democratic, laissez-faire and authoritative. Each of the above style constitutes different characteristics (Marquis & Huston, 2017).

Democratic style of leadership is characterized by the leaders showing little control over what happens in an organization and motivation is through economic awards. This style embraces a two-way style of communication. It embraces the view of constructive criticism. It becomes effective in situations where the members of a group have stayed together for lengthier periods. The second style, the authoritarian style of leadership, demonstrates that the leader has more power over the subjects. It adopts the one-way communication approach – top-to-bottom, and solitary approach to the decision-making process. Criticism is unaccepted. This style can be used in organizations with predictable paths of actions. In the last style- the

laissez-faire, leaders are permissive and have no control. The leaders do not guide the group on the right path to take, and the decision-making process is a task mandated by the whole group. The group is the central thing with no criticism accepted.

We experience at least a glimpse of leach style of leadership in our line of duty. While the above is the case in my organization, the predominant style is the democratic one. Our management embraces the contribution of all members in the decision-making processes and usually highlight the need for togetherness. They encourage two-way communication and are open to constructive criticism. My current manager is a democratic leader. She promotes teamwork and collaboration and is a proponent of two-way communication. These attributes define the democratic leadership style (Finkelman, 2016). As a leader, I support effective communication, collaboration, and constructive criticism. These attributes constitute effective leadership. Finkelman (2016) states that strong leadership that embraces collaboration and the alignment of individual goals to the organizational goals lead to the realization of quality healthcare delivery.
