Discussion:
Just as we Americans have an ethos, that is, the kinds of values we think we ought to believe in as citizens of this country, so too didn't the Romans.
In this discussion, begin by describing one example of the Roman Ethos and explain what it tells us about Roman culture. The founding fathers of the United States were very impressed by Rome and Roman rule. Given what you understand about our American democracy, society and culture, do you think that the example of Roman Ethos that you selected is relevant to our American society today? Why or why not? Explain.

Although this unit’s readings about Hellenic Greece begin by having things to say about philosophy (of course!) and military conquest, its seems that the largest amount of material in Chapter 3 concerns itself with ancient Greek theater. Indeed, through the ancient Greeks’ appreciation for and development of the theatrical arts, we can gain a much better understanding of their consciousness, their philosophy, and their way of life.
With their cultural appreciation of theater in mind, explain the Greeks’ tendency to focus heavily upon the dramatic genre of tragedy.
