One of the goals of this assignment is to engage with and learn about a culture at CSUN that is very different from your own. This means you have little to no knowledge about this culture. For example, if you are in a fraternity, engaging in the sorority culture would not be a good choice- it's too similar. There are various ways you can engage with a cultural group, the first step is to research and explore the campus. This university is surrounded by diverse cultures, departments, offices, majors, organizations, clubs, etc. Come talk to me about this if you need help brainstorming.
You are completing an ethnography. This means you will observe AND engage/ participate within this culture, not just as a bystander. Some options include: attending events, rituals, or spend time at places where people from the culture hang out/meet, or occupy a space. You will engage in dialogue with people from the culture. As you do your field experience, you will also support your understanding of the culture through library research.
Instructions and Requirements:
- Research early in the semester various cultures at CSUN
- Engage with a culture (very different from your own) at CSUN
- Observe the people, behaviors, communication, etc.
- Have a conversation with a minimum of one person
- Submission includes
- 4 to 5 pages without the references/works cited page
- Analyze the culture and the experience using course concepts,terms, and theories. You are putting theory into practice.

- Media representations of this culture
- ICC skills and competencies used/developed
- Additional research. You will research reliable resources about the culture.
