Critical Review

The final assignment for this class will be a 10-page critical reviewof the drug treatment for a psychiatric disorder (broadly defined toinclude psychological and neurological disorders as well). The reviewwill use peer-reviewed sources to evaluate the current drug treatmentmodalities for the selected disorder and determine the adequacy of thosetreatments. The paper will be evaluated on the inclusion of thefollowing information:

Introduction
Evaluate the disorder in terms ofsymptomatic and behavioral presentation. Include the time, course, andprogression of the disorder. Evaluate and explain special features ofthe disease epidemiology.

Theory
Evaluate the predominant theory ortheories regarding the biological basis of the disorder. Explain thedisorder in terms of pertinent neurotransmitter and receptor theoriesand describe the pertinent evidence of their involvement. Analyze theneurotransmitter systems in terms of the involved receptors and the usereceptor agonists and antagonists in the treatment of the disorderreceptor. Include information on the anatomic changes to the centralnervous system as appropriate to the topic.

Treatment
Evaluate drug therapies for treatingthe disorder based on the current understanding of the biological basisof the disorder and the corresponding behavioral effects of thedisorder. Explain pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in relation tothe disorder and corresponding drug treatment. Describe any side effectsand adverse effects of the drug treatment and their biological basis,including issues related to contraindications, interactions, drugmetabolism, and elimination. In addition, explain risks, benefits, andethical implications for high-risk and exceptional treatment conditions.

Conclusion
Summarize theories of psychiatricdisease as they relate to principles of drug action within the chosentopic. Evaluate advantages and disadvantages of the current theory ofthe disorder and its treatment and evaluate any controversies regardingethical and/or risk-benefits perspectives associated with the currenttreatment. Describe possible areas for future research.
