Question Description
You will choose the topic for your paper, as long as it fits within our timeline (Mesopotamia & Egypt to the end of the Middle Ages & the Renaissance) (~4,000 B.C.E. – ~1600 CE.). Your paper can be a biography of a historic person; or a description of an event, society, culture, religion, art, etc. For example: you could write a biography on Julius Caesar, describe the Greek religion, discuss the conflict of the Crusades, or write about the impact of Shakespeare’s plays. You can also compare two peoples, cultures, or religions in your paper. On March 29th, you will bring in your paper idea along with a bibliography of the sources you are planning to use. This will help you plan for your paper without waiting to the last minute. This bibliography will be 10% of your grade.
The paper will be 3-5 pages in length. You will need to have at least one primary source and three secondary sources. DO NOT use Wikipedia or sites like it. If you need help finding your sources, please let me know, I will be happy to help. The school’s library should have plenty of books for you to choose from. Also journal articles on JSTOR or websites ending with .edu will work, but please ask if you have any questions. You will need to have a bibliography at the end of your paper with proper, Chicago style or MLA citation. After quoting a source or using information from a source in your paper, please use parenthetical citation.
For example: Alexander the Great’s personal historian Arrian described a marriage proposal by the King of Scythia to Alexander the Great as a sign of a political alliance between Scythia and the Macedonian Empire. Arrian wrote that the King of Scythia had a “desire to cement the friendship and alliance between their countries by giving him his daughter in marriage.” (Arrian, Book 4.15) ************** Also: Modern historian Terry Buckley argues that Alexander the Great was a good diplomat but also had “personal courage” that his army admired with strong affection. (Buckley, 482)
The citations in parentheses are placed after any information you include in your paper that is directly quoting or paraphrasing someone else’s work. Any sign of plagiarism will result a zero, with possible further action taken.
Your paper should be double spaced with 12 pt. font (Arial, Cambria, Times News Roman). Also, your paper should have one-inch margins on all sides (top, bottom, and sides).
You need at least one primary source for your paper, along with at least three (3) secondary sources. A primary source “provides direct or firsthand evidence about an event, object, person, or work of art. Primary sources include historical and legal documents, eyewitness accounts, results of experiments, statistical data, pieces of creative writing, audio and video recordings, speeches, and art objects. Interviews, surveys, fieldwork, and Internet communications via email, blogs, listservs, and newsgroups are also primary sources” (Ithaca College Library).
Secondary sources “describe, discuss, interpret, comment upon, analyze, evaluate, summarize, and process primary sources. Secondary source materials can be articles in newspapers or popular magazines, book or movie reviews, or articles found in scholarly journals that discuss or evaluate someone else's original research” (Ithaca College Library).
THE PRIMARY SOURCE IS (PLATO)
YOU MUST USE THESE THREE SOURCES PLUS WHATEVER YOU WANT
