Question Description

ITS1960 LINUX PROGRAMMING PROJECT

Two widely used scripting languages for Linux administration (as well as in network administration, cybersecurity, data science and other IT domains requiring on the fly management of systems) are Bash and Python. This project will help you extend what you have already learned with Bash scripting as well as introduce you to Python scripting.

Goal:

Provide students with the ability to create simple scripts/programs to automate and perform simple operations. This knowledge should include basic security practices in developing scripts/programs (e.g., bounds checking, input validation).

Topics:

o Basic Security
o Bounds checking, input validation
o Program Commands
o Program Control Structures
o Variable Declaration
o Debugging
o Scripting Language
o Basic Boolean logic/operations
o AND / OR / XOR / NOT

Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to demonstrate their proficiency in the use of scripting languages to write simple scripts (e.g., to automate system administration tasks).
  • Students will be able to write simple and compound conditions within a programming language or similar environment (e.g., scripts, macros, SQL).
  • Students will be able to write simple linear and looping scripts.

Objectives:

  • Install and troubleshoot running Python interpreter and development environment in Linux
  • Code, debug and compile a series of increasingly complex Bash & Python scripts from tutorials.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR

LINUX PROGRAMMING PROJECT (100 COURSE POINTS)

NOW THAT YOU HAVE LINUX INSTALLED AND RUNNING…THERE ARE MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE SCRIPTING ON THE LINUX PLATFORM USING THE BASH COMMAND LANGUAGE AND PYTHON SCRIPTING ENVIRONMENT ALREADY(OR EASILY INSTALLED) WITH LINUX. COMPLETE THE PROGRAMMING TASKS OUTLINED BELOW. INSERT REQUESTED SCREENSHOTS AND ANSWERS INTO JUST ONE MS WORD DOCUMENT. MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR FULL NAME, THE CLASS NUMBER, ASSIGNMENT TITLE AND CLEARLY LABEL EACH REQUESTED EACH ANSWER AND SCREENSHOT. SCRIPTS AND PROGRAMS SHOULD BE RUN ON YOUR FEDORA MACHINE.

  • COMPLETE BASH SCRIPTING TUTORIALS (15/100 POINTS)
  • B)BASH SCRIPTING ASSIGNMENT (35/100 POINTS)
  • C)PYTHON SCRIPTING TUTORIALS (25/100 POINTS)
  • PYTHON SCRIPTING ASSIGNMENT (25/100 POINTS)
    • Input Validation
  • COMPLETE ALL 5 TUTORIALS LISTED BELOW BY CODING AND RUNNING SCRIPTS ON YOUR OWN LINUX COMPUTER. INCLUDE IN EACH SCRIPT A COMMAND THAT OUTPUTS YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME. FOR HOW TO CODE AND RUN BASH SCRIPTS, REVISIT CHAPTER 07.
