There are numerous categories of suffering that exist on this planet. Human existence itself seems to be a battle against suffering, and while some of this suffering is natural, other types are man-made. I believe the type of suffering that most strongly points against the existence of God is suffering in the form of addiction. My family has had a long history of alcohol and drug addiction. I have seen my grandfather, who is in his 60s, unsuccessfully battle his addiction with alcohol. It is an evil that consumes him every day and has deteriorated his mind to the point of delusion. Yet even as his mind goes, the addiction has steadily remained. It is this suffering that is hard to comprehend in light of the existence of God. No matter how much will or desire a person has to overcome such an evil, the evil can still come out victorious. This begs the question that even if evil had to exist, shouldn't a benevolent God aid His creation in their attempt to achieve the good? Using the free will defense suggested by philosophers like Richard Swinburne, theists can make the argument that it was my grandfather's own free will that allowed him to make the decision to pursue evil in the first place, and the consequences of his choice are no longer God's responsibility. Using this response, the blame is shifted to my grandfather's poor choices. This response does not prove that God is not a benevolent God, it just states that God can no longer do anything to help my grandfather, who has gone against God's will.
