What makes a human settlement a city?
For this assignment, take some time to observe the settlement in which you live. Go to a public location and stay for an hour or two. For example, a grocery store, a mall, a coffee shop, a beach, or any other place where lots of humans gather. Write down what is going on around you: just make some brief notes.
Once you have your notes, write a brief essay explaining what you observed that answers the following questions:
- Would the activities you observed be possible in a food foraging (hunter/gatherer) society? Why?
- What does the location need in order to exist? For example, the coffee in the coffee shop has to come from someplace! Why are each of the things important to that location?
- Who is missing from the location that you observe? That is, what people and occupations are ESSENTIAL to the activities of the location but are not actively present while you are making your observations?
