1. I think the first statement answers pretty much answers the question. Rookie officers emulate the actions of their field training officers. It is therefore important to have good, moral and ethical field training officers, to increase the chance that those rookie officers will grow into professional, ethical and moral, experienced officers. A bad FTO will foster a bad environment and will hinder or damage a future officers ability to do their job.

2. As i am not a police officer, i think it is difficult for me to say with certainty how i would have handled a situation like this. I would like to believe that I would immediately reported it. However i think its also not right to say that the trainee in this situation necessarily did the wrong thing either. It may have taken him a bit more time to process what he had seen and come to a conclusion on whether or not he felt it was excessive force. Although i will acknowledge that the longer it takes to report an incident like this the worse it is for everyone involved. 

3. 1 Timothy 4:8 states that ” while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come”. (ESV) Basically how I would I interpret this and relate it to leadership in criminal justice is as saying that knowing your job is important, the “While bodily training is of some value”. However it is saying that being a good leader, one of godliness is more important and will determine how your team and organization perform now in the present as well as in the future.

4. In the scenario mentioned, I would probably feel bad for a second when the guy I just ticketed offers to pay for my meal. However, that feeling would soon fade as I realize that he still broke the law and that ethically I cannot accept his offer for a free meal. I would thank him for the offer and tell him that I will be back again to eat at his establishment. I would explain that even though he owns the restaurant he unfortunately cannot just park in a handicap spot. I would also tell him that we enjoy his restaurant and that it would look very bad and borderline corrupt if we ate here and let him slide on the law.

1.  The importance of having good field training officers is that they lay out the ethical foundations that rookie officers need to abide by. Having these role models and leaders, in this position, is vital for ensuring that young officers learn what is to be considered right and wrong. Research has found that supervisory ethical leadership is especially important in promoting positive and reducing negative employee behaviors in organizations (Brown & Trevino, 2013). This means that by putting these rookie officers with training officers that operate by all rules and regulations, it can help stop any negative behaviors before they even begin. By sticking them with leaders that may emulate and let slide some bad behaviors is like a virus, by infecting one it only helps the spread.

2. For the scenario in the lecture notes I can say I would have probably handled the situation the same. I’ve been put in situations before, not to this magnitude, but to the point where it has kept me up at night. The feeling of guilt, eating away at my soul, only made me more stressed out. It got to a point where I needed to tell someone just to relieve the stress, no matter the punishment I may have received, I knew it would be the right thing to do. “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32, ESV). It’s always been more beneficial for me to tell the truth than to continue to live a lie.

3. This scripture is especially important to having relevant and effective leadership. Any leader can be physically strong, but being spiritually strong means they will have more influence on those that they lead. Part of the social learning process is that individuals focus their attention on modeled behaviors (Brown & Trevino, 2013), so by observing a leader that lives by God’s values, such as respecting all people, being honest, remaining humble, forgiving others, etc.…, their teachings will align with ethical practices. This also helps create an image of trust among the public and fellow officers.

4. To me the ethical thing to do is decline the payment for lunch, because at this point accepting the payment would feel almost like bribery. It’s obvious that the man is only willing to pay for the meal to strike up a conversation about the parking ticket in an attempt to have it ripped up. I would also expect my fellow officers to decline the offer, because although I may have written the ticket, it’s their duty to uphold the law and respect my decision, as a fellow police officer, to give Dave the ticket.
