Part A.Local threaten species search

2.From the web page, select the “Other Search Options.”

3.The new screen will display a series of options for searchingthe database. Click on “Location” in the red box on the left-hand side ofthe screen. Expand “Land Regions” by clicking on the “+” until you cansee countries/states listed in a region of interest. Put a check in thebox next to “your” country/state of interest (suggestion: pick a country orU.S. state you would like to learn more about).

IMPORTANT: Clickthe red arrow to move your selection into the box on the right-hand side of thescreen. Click on “Run Search.” How many species were returned?

4.Narrow your list: Now click on “Assessment” in the red boxon the left-hand side of the screen. Expand “Red List Categories.”Un-check all categories except CR and EN. Click on “Refine.” Nowhow many species were returned?

5.These are the species that, without concerted conservationeffort, are about to be lost from your country/state.

Using the list you generated, consider:What does it matter if these species go extinct in your country? In otherwords, why are they important?

In asentence, write down the country/state you selected and the number of CR andEN species on your list.

Part B.Direct use value

Searchthrough the species list and identify one imperiled species that provides significantvalue as a good or product. Describe that value. Does thespecies represent a source of food? Of fiber? Of materials?Of medicine? Is it traded? What loss would its extinctionrepresent? Write down the species’ name and your thoughts on its valueas a good.

Part C.Indirect use value

Nowsearch through the list of imperiled species of your country/state and identifyone species that provides a significant ecological value, function, or service.Describe its ecological value. Ecological values can often be the mostelusive to identify so think hard about this species and how it fits into andcontributes to the ecosystem where it lives. Does the species providepollination services? Does it prey on pests? Does it play a role innutrient and carbon cycles? Think broadly about ecosystem interactionsand consider what role this species might play. What ecological losswould this species’ extinction represent? Write down the species’ nameand your thoughts on its ecological role.

Part D.Other indirect values – cultural and spiritual value

Nowsearch through the species list and identify one imperiled species that hascultural value. Describe that value. Does the species play arole in myth or literature? Is it beautiful? Is it scary? Isit intriguing or curious? What loss would its extinction represent?Write down the species’ name and your thoughts on its cultural significanceto you.
