There are so many means of transportation that 1^st graders should be aware of. For students at this age level it would be like exploring something new or simply a clarification on what surrounds them that they are not aware of. I may start by asking how you came to school today. On the board I would place picture of a train, a public bus, school bus, car and a truck. I would ask students to place a tally mark on how they travel to school today. I would show pictures of the many way you can go from one place to another. Later I’d provide a matching Sheet activity for students to work on to demonstrate how well they understood the different ways of transportation. Once student identify different ways of transportation using their previous experiences they will write 2-3 sentences and draw a picture on their favorite way to travel. Here they can talk about a trip they went on whether on land, water, or air. For wheels that moves I will start with the song wheels on the bus, children love to join in. I may ask why are we singing this song, many will automatically know it has something to do with wheels and how they move. Discuss with students how wheels are useful in transportation. Show pictures of different size wheels and how they match to different types of vehicles. For Wings that move things I would start by talking about airplanes and their shape and size of their wing. With a toy airplane I would tell how wings help a plane lift of the ground and how the airplane moves through the air and how wings causes changes in the speed. Showing an animated video may help. For People who work in transportation I will show different picture hat on these jobs. The pictures will help them have an idea. I will explain to students on the various jobs that transportation has created in our community. They will learn the importance of all transportation and the history around it.
