One of the measures of good system design is how costly, difficult,or intrusive it is to make changes to that system. Consider the problemof a business owner who has decided to use neon for his store-frontsignage. Neon signs, in which data (information) presentation is boundtogether with the sign itself, may have to be completely rebuilt tomake even a relatively simple change. As a result, any update to thatsignage is going to take time and money and will limit the owner’sability to advertise whatever content he wanted on that sign. Inaddition, the change requires special expertise—expertise that theowner or his staff may not possess. The choice of neon is an example of atightly coupled solution. On the other hand, digital signageis quick and easy to update, costs very little, and requires no specialtraining to execute. This is a loosely coupled option.

Another measure of good design is simplicity. It is easier to followand execute simple and distinct directions than complex and muddledones. The same holds true for objects within a system. Objects thatperform one distinct activity are easier to understand and to createthan objects that have a multitude of functions and activities.“Single-minded” objects (as your text refers to them) have high cohesion.
