Here are some possible essay questions. Choose one. You are allowed to come up with your own question, but be sure to clear it with me first. Essays should be around three to four pages in 12-point font, double-spaced (not including the bibliography). You do not need a title-page; instead, you just need to include your name, student number, course number, your teaching assistant's name, and the date in the top right hand corner of the first page. Your essay should have a title that reflects not only your topic but your argument about that topic; an introductory paragraph that introduces your topic, suggests how it will be approached in regards to the text, and closes with a clear and specific thesis statement; supporting paragraphs organized around points that support your thesis and that open with a strong topic sentence; specific evidence from the primary text itself; and a strong conclusion that reinforces your thesis and suggests something about its wider implications.

1. Many have commented on connections between some of the concerns of Dream Story and the theories of Sigmund Freud. How might the two be compared and contrasted? Please note that for a question like this you must be very specific when it comes to the work of Freud. When it comes to possible avenues, the link between sex and death, the extent to which sex impacts/underlies our actions, and the role of the unconscious could be fruitful.

2. Discuss the many links between sex and death in Dream Story. What is the significance of these links? There are many ways that this can be pursued, so find a clear and focused way to tie your argument together.

3. Discuss the structure ofDream Story. How is the novella constructed? What is the significance of this construction? Please note that there are several ways that this can be approached, from the dream-like quality of the plot, to the contrast between Fridolin's adventures during the night and his attempt to retrace his steps the day after.

4. Discuss Dream Storyin relation to sexuality. Of particular interest could be the novella's attitude towards sexual mores, sex and power, sex and love, and even sexually transmitted diseases.

5. Compare and contrast Dream Storywith the film adaptation. What changes did Kubrick make when adapting the novella? Were they successful? Why or why not? What do they suggest about the story Schnitzler was trying to tell? Of particular interest could be the modern setting, the importance of Ziegler's party and Ziegler himself, the note of tension that Kubrick introduces, etc.

6. How does the novella explore the nature of deception? This could include deception between loved ones, for examples, or that between one's inner and outer life. How does one present oneself to the world, and how does one actually feel on the inside? How do we deceive those around us, even those we love? Finally, how do we deceive ourselves? The use and role of masks is one way to approach this question, but Schnitzler's masks are as much figurative as they are literal. In many of his works, we are all wearing masks all of the time, even when we look in the mirror.
